The Old Testament episode of the healing of the old, pious Tobit by his son established itself as a popular pictorial theme in the 17th century. The archangel Raphael, in the present work elaborately staged on the left edge of the picture, gave Tobias the decisive hint to apply healing fish gall to his blind father's eyes (Tob 11:11).
