Provenance: Private property, Switzerland (since 1966).
Throughout his life, Émile Othon Friesz delved extensively into the depiction of harbor scenes. Early on, he showed a keen interest in the moored fishing boats, which were docked in long rows. As a result, he produced numerous works in the harbors of Le Havre, Antwerp, Dieppe, etc. Friesz made several visits to the small port town of Honfleur in Normandy. In the present painting, the artist captured the harbor basin there at ease with a long, broad ductus. The painting belongs to a small group of works displaying the motif from slightly different angles.
