Greek-Roman mythology had a profound influence on Picasso's work. While in the 1930s the Minotaur - considered the artist’s alter ego - was the central theme, from the 1940s onward the Bacchantes and the entire Dionysian retinue took the spotlight. With the restoration of peace after 1945 and Picasso’s regular stays in Antibes, his pictorial worlds increasingly became populated by satyrs, centaurs, fauns, and Bacchantes.
