Paul McCarthy, who caused a public stir primarily with his performances and sculptures, is one of the most influential American artists of the present day. While the American artist initially explored performances and actions on the theme of gravity, he focused more on sexually provocative works from the mid-1970s onwards, including the use of unorthodox materials such as food or bodily fluids. At the end of the 2000s, McCarthy created his first large-scale projects for public areas, including "Santa Claus" and "(Christmas)tree," which led to controversial discussions due to their ambiguity. Throughout McCarthy's oeuvre, humans are a constant theme, often humorously realized in conjunction with a provocative critique of American culture.
