The painting was created around 1885-1890.
The work is part of a small series of depictions of washerwomen on the riverbank. The motif - inspired by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny - stands in glaring contrast to Eugène-Louis Boudin's sophisticated beach scenes and harbor scenes from northern France. In the present work, the artist documented local women at their routine chores. To him, the washerwomen offered a new approach to merge his favorite elements of sky, water, and landscape with the human figure on the canvas.
