This painting is dated around 1850-1860. On his travels
through France, Italy and other European countries, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot had the opportunity to study various coastal regions. His resulting depictions, especially those of his late work, are characterized by a calm and peaceful mood. This mood also characterizes the present section of
coastline, bathed in soft light with the lone fisherman in the foreground and the town of La Rochelle in the background.
