We would like to thank Georg Lechner, Belvedere, Vienna, for his confirmation via email that the present painting was created by Martin van Meytens with the assistance of members of his workshop.

The portrait on offer features the Emperor Franz I Stephan, who was married to Empress Maria Theresa, as he was often depicted by Martin van Meytens in the workshop. The prestigious semi-figure portrait captures the ruler in one of his magnificent robes with the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck and a crown beside him. The carefully styled full-bottomed wig and the detailed rendering of the brocade fabric testify to van Meyten's virtuosity as an enamel and miniature painter.

Das angebotene Porträt zeigt den Gatten der Kaiserin Maria Theresia, Kaiser Franz I. Stephan, wie er oft von Martin van Meytens im Rahmen des Werkstattbetriebes dargestellt wurde. Das repräsentative Halbfigurenbildnis hält den Regenten in einer seiner prächtigen Roben mit dem Orden vom Goldenen Vlies um den Hals und einer Krone neben sich fest. Die sorgfältig coiffierte Allongeperücke und die detailreiche Wiedergabe des Brokatstoffes zeugen von van Meytens Virtuosität als Email- und Miniaturmaler.
