During his short life, Keith Haring was involved in several social movements, criticizing racism and social injustice. In the 1980s, he joined the anti-apartheid movement, opposing the South African government's institutionalized racial segregation. The present lithograph is based on a painting from 1984 that is now in Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum. Along with the limited edition of 60 copies, Haring had 20,000 offset posters printed, which he distributed in New York City in 1986. "Free South Africa (Untitled 1)" is one of three variations of the motif. Here, the big black character is to be understood as a representative of the majority black population, struggling against the oppression by the white minority. On the other hand, apartheid is represented in the form of a snake about to devour a small white figure - which represents the white minority. In 1994, nine years after Haring's work was created, apartheid was officially abolished with Nelson Mandela at the helm.
