Confirmation of authenticity: Arthur Ackermann & Son, London (titled "Water Buffalo").
Provenance: Collection Family George Pitt, England; Koller Auctions, Zurich, 1966, lot 1427; Private ownership, Switzerland.
According to Renée Loche, the painting on offer was created between 1820 and 1824. At this time, Jacques-Laurent Agasse was already known as an animal painter. An accurate brushwork, clear contours and visible light in different shades characterize this composition. Anatomic studies and scientific analysis enabled Agasse to achieve true-to-life perfection. According to the confirmation, the model was not found in the wild but in the zoo of the family Pitt. Family member George Pitt was a patron to Agasse.
We would like to thank Renée Loche, Geneva, for all her information about this oeuvre.

Echtheitsbestätigung: Arthur Ackermann & Son, London (dort betitelt "Water Buffalo").
