Provenance: Richard Buckner Collection, London, 1873 (listed as work by Aelbert Cuyp); Christie's, London, May 15, 1936, lot no. 5 (listed as work by A. Cuyp); Christie's, London, July 24, 1936, lot no. 114 (listed as work by Cuyp); Bruinse, Kunsthandel, 1939; Collectie Goudstikker, Amsterdam, no. 5758 ( verso label); Frederik Muller & Cie, auction, July 3-10, 1951, lot no. 590 (offered as work by Barent van Kalreat, with a written attribution to Abraham van Calreat by Horst Gerson); Joseph Jans, Lucerne; Galerie Fischer, Lucerne, June 17, 1952, lot no. 2178 (listed as work by A. Cuyp); private property, Switzerland.

2, Esslingen/Paris, 1908, p. 219, no. 786a (listed there as the work of A. Cuyp).

Because of their similar style and the same initials, the works of Abraham van Calraet were often attributed to his presumed teacher Aelbert Cuyp. According to the opinion of Ellis Dullaart, the offered composition is possibly a copy of a painting by Abraham van Calraet. Sander Paarlberg of the Dordrechts Museum, on the other hand, assigns the work to the artist's circle or workshop, but does not necessarily exclude a direct attribution. Paarlberg also refers to a painting in the collection of the Dulwich Picture Gallery that bears a strong resemblance to our work on offer and which is attributed to Abraham van Calraet.

We would like to thank Ellis Dullaart, RKD, The Hague, and Sander Paarlberg, Dordrechts Museum, for their advice and information.
