Contrary to a former adscription to Peter Paul Rubens, according to Bert Schepers of the Centrum Rubenianum, Antwerp, this painting is a characteristic work by Jan Thomas van Yperen. This artist was one of the collaborators in Rubens’ workshop. Later, around 1639/40, he was accepted into the St. Lucas guild as an independent artist. An almost equal version of this painting can be found in the collection of the Musée du Louvre in Paris (Inventory-no. M.I. 973). According to Mr. Schepers, both compositions date to around 1640-1654. They are inspired by a Rubens painting created in collaboration with Jan Brueghel II in 1626, which is now at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (Inventory-no. 344).

Entgegen einer früheren Zuschreibung an Peter Paul Rubens ist das angebotene Gemälde gemäss Bert Schepers, Centrum Rubenianum, Antwerpen, ein charakteristisches Werk von Jan Thomas van Yperen, der sich einige Zeit in der Werkstatt von Rubens aufhielt und um 1639/40 als unabhängiger Künstler in die St. Lukasgilde aufgenommen wurde. Eine annähernd formatgleiche Version unseres Werkes befindet sich heute in der Sammlung des Musée du Louvre in Paris (Inventar-Nr. M.I. 973). Beide, gemäss Bert Schepers in die Zeit um 1640-1654 zu datierenden Kompositionen sind inspiriert von einem Rubens-Gemälde, das um 1626 in Zusammenarbeit mit Jan II Brueghel entstanden ist und sich heute in der Alten Pinakothek in München befindet (Inventar-Nr. 344).
