Beim angebotenen Blatt wohl des 19. Jahrhunderts handelt es sich um eine Kopie von Benjamin Wests berühmtem Gemälde "The Death of General Wolfe" aus dem Jahr 1770 (heute National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa), von welchem vier von Benjamin West selbst und seiner Werkstatt angefertigte Repliken existieren. Unser qualitätvolles und seltenes Aquarell lehnt sich eng an die 1776 entstandene und heute in der Sammlung der William L. Clemens Library der University of Michigan Ann Arbor aufbewahrte Replik an. Das Gemälde wurde von Friedrich Karl August (1743-1812), Fürst von Waldeck-Pyrmont, in Auftrag gegeben. Es zeigt den Sterbemoment des tödlich verletzten Generals James Wolfe (1727-1759) während der Schlacht auf der Abraham-Ebene, die 1959 in der Nähe der Stadt Québec stattfand. Trotz tragischem Ausgang für den General selbst bildete Wolfes Sieg den Wendepunkt in den sogenannten Franzosen- und Indianerkriegen, der den Briten die Herrschaft über Kanada brachte.

The offered sheet, probably from the 19th century, is a copy of Benjamin West's famous painting "The Death of General Wolfe" from 1770 (today National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa), of which four replicas made by Benjamin West himself and his workshop exist. Our high-quality and rare watercolour painting is closely based on the replica made in 1776 who is kept today in the collection of the William L. Clemens Library of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The painting was commissioned by Friedrich Karl August (1743-1812), Prince of Waldeck-Pyrmont, Landgrave of Hesse. It shows the moment of death of the fatally wounded General James Wolfe (1727-1759) during the battle on the Abraham plain, which took place near the city of Québec in 1759. Despite the tragic outcome for the general himself, Wolfes' victory marked the turning point in the so-called French and Indian wars that brought the British rule over Canada.
