Collioure, the southern French port town on the Côte Vermeille, was considered the Mecca of the Fauvists at the beginning of the 20th century. Their leading representatives, Henri Matisse and André Derain, came to Collioure in 1905 to paint; they were followed by numerous other French avant-garde artists, including Foujita. Nina Hamnett, a British painter and writer, visited him in Collioure and wrote retrospectively in her memoirs: "The Foujitas had the best house in Collioure. (...). Matisse had lived there for many summers. (...). Foujita painted at home during the afternoons. He did not use easel, but placed a canvas against a chair and sat on the floor with his legs crossed. He worked with a tiny brush, very radidly." (Nina Hamnett, Laughing Torso, London 1932). The painting on offer, dated 1919 by Sylvie Buisson, opens the view from a slightly elevated position onto Collioure with the former island Ilot St-Vincent, the chapel, the lighthouse and remains of the former fortress walls in the painting’s centre. Foujita is able to transform this real view into a surreal dream world. He covers the landscape with a silvery-brown glimmer, sets a subtle stretching of the two palm trees on the left against a row of houses in interlocking blocks that reflect the confrontation with Cubism, in the centre of the picture, and downsizes the small island with the church on the right in perspective. Isolated figures populate the scenery - a small dog on the left, an empty chair in front and two chickens, and dressed in black - giving it a mystical atmosphere.

Das angebotene Gemälde wird in den sich bei Sylvie Buisson in Vorbereitung befindlichen 4. Band des Catalogue Raisonné aufgenommen und ins Jahr 1919 datiert.

Collioure, das an der Côte Vermeille gelegene südfranzösische Hafenstädtchen, galt anfangs des 20. Jahrhunderts als Mekka der Fauvisten. Deren Hauptvertreter, Henri Matisse und André Derain, kamen bereits 1905 nach Collioure, um dort zu malen; ihnen folgten zahlreiche weitere Künstler der französischen Avantgarde, darunter auch Foujita. Nina Hamnett, eine britische Malerin und Schriftstellerin, besuchte ihn damals in Collioure und hielt retrospektiv in ihren Memoiren fest: "The Foujitas had the best house in Collioure. (...). Das vorliegende, von Sylvie Buisson auf 1919 datierte Gemälde eröffnet den Blick aus leicht erhöhter Lage auf Collioure mit dem ehemalige Inselchen Ilot St-Vincent, der Kapelle, dem Leuchtturm und Überresten der ehemaligen Festungsmauern im Bildzentrum. Es gelingt Foujita mit sparsam eingesetzten malerischen Mitteln, diese reale Ansicht in eine surreale Traumwelt zu verwandeln. Er überzieht die Landschaft mit einem silbrig-braunen Schimmer, setzt eine subtile Längung der beiden Palmen links gegen eine blockhaft-verschachtelte Häuserreihe im Bildzentrum - die die Auseinandersetzung mit dem reifen Kubismus verraten -und verkleinert perspektivisch die kleine Insel mit der Kirche rechts. Isolierte Figuren bevölkern die Szenerie - links ein kleiner Hund, vorne ein leerer Stuhl und zwei Hühner, dahinter eine schwarz gekleidete Rückenfigur - und verleihen ihr eine mystische Atmosphäre.
