The offered work is dated around 1899.
The painting at hand belongs to Louis Valtat's early creative period and reveals both Impressionist and Pointillist accents. It depicts a sunlit summer park scene with women on benches and children at play. The peaceful scene is made up of short, curved brushstrokes in intensely bright colors. In 1898 Valtat was already working on a similar depiction of the Jardin du Luxembourg with a correspondingly abstracted quality (catalog raisonné 1977, no. 208). The painting's lyrical, expressive style is reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh, whose works Valtat admired. The three compositions "Le Luxembourg" (CR no. 294), "La promenade" (CR no. 295) and "Jardin du Luxembourg" (CR no. 296) make it clear that Louis Valtat continued in 1901 to deal with the theme of the park , although all the works mentioned do not possess the same dynamic brushwork as the work offered in this auction.

Das vorliegende Gemälde entstammt Louis Valtats früher Schaffensphase und lässt sowohl impressionistische als auch pointillistische Akzente erkennen. Gezeigt wird eine sommerlich lichtdurchflutete Parkszene mit Frauen auf Bänken und Kindern beim Spielen. Das friedliche Motiv ist aus kurzen, geschwungenen Pinselbahnen in intensiv leuchtenden Farben generiert. Bereits 1898 arbeitete Valtat an einer ähnlichen Darstellung des Jardin du Luxembourg von entsprechend abstrahierter Qualität (Werkverzeichnis 1977, Nr. 208). Die lyrische, ausdruckstarke Malweise erinnert an Vincent van Gogh, dessen Werke der Franzose mit grossem Interesse verfolgt hatte. Wie die drei Kompositionen "Le Luxembourg" (WV-Nr. 294), "La promenade" (WV-Nr. 295) und "Jardin du Luxembourg" (WV-Nr. 296) deutlich machen, sollte das Thema des Parks Louis Valtat 1901 nochmals beschäftigen, jedoch besitzen alle genannten Arbeiten nicht die gleiche Dynamik in der Pinselführung wie das zur Versteigerung gelangende Werk.
