The present sculpture comes from Series no. 3, one of five unique series of works, each consisting of 25 warriors distinguished by different arm positions. Yue Minjun’s ,,Contemporary Terracotta Warriors’’ are a modern reinterpretation of the famous Terracotta Army from the mausoleum of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi. The series features broadly and stereotypically grinning, caricature-like figures - a hallmark of the artist - which ironically allude to the uniform conformity of modern society. With his iconic expressions, Yue addresses the tension between tradition and individuality in contemporary Chinese culture, thereby linking China's imperial past with modern social critique.
